Art
Intent
At St Mary's we have created a curriculum for Art that will help our children to develop a sense of creativity, self expression, and imagination, and a love for the subject that will last a lifetime. We intend for all children to acquire appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum. It is our aim to create strong links with other subjects, such as D.T., History, Geography and Science. We intend to give our children a clear understanding of the arts from different cultures and places across the globe. We want to encourage the children to express themselves creatively using a range of different media ensuring a secure progression of skills from EYFS to Year 6.
Implementation
At St Mary's we are 'Called to Make a Difference' by living out our values.
We focus on a specific value each half term, and this is incorporated into the whole school curriculum. We are dedicated to the teaching and delivery of a high-quality Art Curriculum.
This is implemented through:
- A yearly overview of the Art Curriculum. This allows for progression across year groups in all areas of Art ( drawing, painting, sculpture and craft and design.)
- Well planned projects, gallery or museum visits and artist workshops to provide hands on and enriching experiences.
- Teachers being given ownership and flexibility to plan and deliver Art.
- Teachers will introduce the objective to the whole class followed by group and individual work. New techniques and skills are modelled, and examples of work are shown to the children. They are given additional support when needed. Children can investigate, explore and develop ideas and techniques. They can evaluate their work, celebrate success and identify areas to develop.
EYFS
There is continuous provision of Art opportunities, these activities make important contributions to their development in the areas of Expressive Arts and Design, Communication and Language and Personal, Social and Emotional Development.
The children have opportunities to learn to:
- Use different media and materials to express their own ideas.
- Make plans and construct 3-d sculptures with a purpose in mind.
- Develop skills to use simple tools and techniques effectively.
Impact
Each pupil will experience a broad and balanced art curriculum.
They will be given a wide variety of opportunities to express themselves creatively. They will begin to develop an awareness of the emotional impact the arts have on themselves and on an audience. They will become more critical of their own work and how it affects them emotionally. They will be able to draw conclusions and make comparisons of art across the globe, understanding it's social significance and how a multitude of cultures inspire creation in Britain.
Children's skills and knowledge are continually assessed by the class teacher throughout lessons and a summative assessment is completed annually. This informs the Art Subject Leader of any further areas for curriculum development, pupil support and/or training requirements for staff.
