Year 1 - St. Francis of Assisi

Welcome to Year 1!

Class Teachers - Miss O'Neill & Mrs Lowe

Teaching Assistants - Mrs Newsham

As part of our science topic we will be looking at animals. This will include fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals. We will also look at animal diets and use the words carnivore, herbivore and omnivore.

In maths we are learning about place value at the start of the term. Number bonds to ten are very important to help solve problems and we will daily work on these.  Please keep counting in 2's, 5's and 10's at home to help with your child's learning.

In English we are listening to and retelling the story of The Little Red Hen. We will write a postcard from a hot or cold country describing what we can see and feel. Then we will write an animal themed poem.

In computing we are using purplemash and you can use   your child's login to access this at home.

www.purplemash.com/stmarysla4

Geography sees us using maps and atlases as we look at the hot and cold regions of the world.

PE is on Tuesday and Friday and children need to come dressed ready for PE.  Children with pierced ears must not wear their earrings on PE days or cover with tape.

 Information

Water bottles will be sent home Friday to wash and return Monday.

The most important thing I can say to you is PLEASE listen to your child read.

 Phonic Screening Check

What is the phonics screening check?

The phonic screening check is a quick and easy way to check your child's phonic knowledge.  This is a national assessment delivered to all Year 1 children.

When will the phonics screening take place?

The screening this year will take place June 2025

How does the check work?

Your child will be asked to read 40 words aloud. The words are split into real words and nonsense/alien words.  The nonsense/alien words test your child's decoding skills using their phonic knowledge.

Results

You child's results will be reported to you in the Summer Term.  If you child has not met the required level we will continue to support them in school. They will have the opportunity to retake the check in Year 2.

Our Class Reading Bear is ready to visit your homes.
