EYFS

At St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, we recognise that the early years are critical in establishing the foundations for future learning and development. Experiences during this stage have a significant impact on children’s life chances; therefore, we place high importance on the role of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) in securing strong outcomes for all children.

Curriculum Intent

At St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, we aim to deliver an ambitious, inclusive and well-sequenced Early Years curriculum that enables all children to make strong progress from their starting points.

Our curriculum prioritises personal, social and emotional development and communication and language, ensuring children develop the confidence, independence and social skills needed to become effective learners. The learning environment supports children to express their needs, feelings and ideas while developing an understanding of our core school values. Children are encouraged to recognise and celebrate their individual strengths in line with our school motto, “Called to make a difference.”

The curriculum is carefully planned and progressive, building on what children already know and can do. It provides the knowledge, skills and vocabulary children need to be ready for the next stage of their education.

EYFS Principles

Our provision is guided by the statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage and is underpinned by the following principles:

· Every child is unique We provide a broad and balanced curriculum that meets the needs of all

learners, ensuring equality of opportunity and high expectations for every child.

Positive relationships support learning Secure relationships enable children to develop socially and emotionally, learn to cooperate with others and follow routines that support effective learning.

Enabling environments promote progress Children learn best in well-organised environments where a carefully sequenced curriculum is delivered by knowledgeable adults who know the children well and respond to their needs.

Learning is sequential and purposeful Teaching builds on children’s prior knowledge and experiences, ensuring progression over time and preparing children effectively for Key Stage 1.

As a result of our ambitious and inclusive Early Years curriculum at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, children make strong progress from their starting points and are well prepared for the next stage of their learning.
