PSHE and HRSE
Intent
At St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, PSHE is at the core of what we do and enables our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society with a strong sense of identity. We strive to support and develop the “whole child” intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually developing a questioning mind. Through our whole-school approach to PSHE, it is our belief that excellence in these areas will lead to excellence across the curriculum and beyond into later life. PSHE is taught across the school on a weekly basis. We follow the Coram Scarf and Kidsafe PSHE schemes. Our PSHE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. With an ever changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community. Weaving through the heart of our PSHE teaching, is a commitment to enhancing and promoting our core Catholic Gospel values.
Implementation
Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision and values which aim to enable all children to aim high and have a positive impact on the world around them. We teach the National Curriculum, supported by clear skills and knowledge progression. The cover of our PSHE curriculum ensures progression, development and consolidation of knowledge, understanding and skills our pupils need. Coram Scarf PSHE directs our aim on developing the “whole child” through a spiral curriculum approach to developing knowledge, skills and understanding in the areas of;
- Me and My Relationships
- Valuing Difference
- Keeping Safe
- Rights and Respect
- Being My Best
In addition to the discrete lessons taught at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, PSHE skills are developed through a number of activities and opportunities such as Liturgies, Half termly School Values, Picture News, visitors, themed weeks, Kidsafe activities, School Council and School Trips.
Impact
Through our PSHE curriculum, we believe we can enhance children's education. When our children leave school they are:
- able to understand and manage their emotions.
- have the courage and ability to try new things, challenge themselves and persevere.
- able to look after their mental health and wellbeing.
- able to make healthy choices and how to keep healthy.
- able to appreciate difference and diversity.
- demonstrate and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual Respect, Rule of Law and Individual Liberty.
- be equipped to make a positive impact on the world around them.
- to be inspired to aim high and reach for the stars!
